Help Wanted - Weekends
Follys Farm is looking for a volunteer to help out at the weekends with mucking and grooming the donkeys. Please call if you are interested.

Sparky - Sparky sadly passed away on the 14th December 2004.He had not been well for a few days and was not eating or drinking. Sparky was bought by a supporter of the sanctuary from Southall market on 11th January 1995, When he arrived he had over a years growth on his feet. He had been used for riding by disabled people. He had a kidney problem and never looked as healthy as the other donkeys.

Follys Farm Website back on line!

After popular demand and some additional finances we have managed to get the website back up and running. We will be updating the site shortly and bringing everything back up to date. So, please bear with us. The email addresses have been checked and are all working fine. The adoption forms can be downloaded.. click here (may take a short while.. please be patient), We have also introduced a printable adoption form - direct from the site

Gertrude - It is with great sadness that on 17th October 2003 Gertrude passed away. She was a very old lady and was suffering from osteoarthritis badly on a knee joint, She was eating well up to a few days before she went, A big thank you must go to Jean Cook who helped Gertrude in her last few weeks, and Alan her son who very kindly dug her grave, and last but not least Chris Day a very wonderful vet and kind person who did everything to help her. May she be happy in her next life…

Cally, formerly known as Cameo came to the Sanctuary on the 25/08/2003 as a companion for Gertrude.

Cally is a very attractive brown and white British Toggenburg x British Alpine. She was born on the 24/3/1998. I contacted a Mr & Mrs Hodges (suppliers of Goats Cheese) to  see if I could buy a goat  from them, They in turn very kindly offered me Cameo and transported her to Follys Farm. Cally has settled in very well and doesn’t seem to have been affected by the loss of Gertrude. When Cally comes into season she makes up to Dusty and Misty, for playing she looks to Ted, butting him all the time. Ted takes it all in his stride and seems not to be bothered, somehow I think he too has grown fond of Cally and follows her around.

                                            Donkey News

On the whole all the donkeys at Follys Farm health wise, have been very well. Having said that we have quite a few abscesses in the feet.

At present as I write this article we have 3 donkeys that are being treated for foot infections.

They are being poulticed each day to draw out the infection. This procedure will continue until all the infection is removed. The time it takes depends on how deep the infection is.

This is a common problem with donkeys as they are not native to this country and our climate conditions do not suit the donkey’s hooves.

                                                       “China Girl”

China Girl suffers from C.O.P.D (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) also known as “Broken Wind”. This disease is similar to Asthma in humans.
On the whole she remains stable but the weather conditions or the pollen count can make the condition worse at different times of the year. Her 4 homeopathic remedies are on going which suit her and she is carefully monitored by ourselves and the sanctuary vet, Chris Day.

                                                  “Murphy and Hee-Haw”

Murphy and Hee-Haw had their annual day out on the Palm Sunday Parade on the 4th of April.

Yet again they behaved themselves and led the procession along the road from the hall to the gates of the church and as per usual enjoyed the attention they received as the procession went into the church.
Murphy is an old hand at this and this has been his 10th year of leading the procession. Hee-Haw replaced Danny in 2001 and has taken to it very well.

                                                Forge Farm… Hay News..

Mike and Tracy Franklin from Forge Farm in Nettleden have offered the use of their field to make hay, free of charge. The field is approximately 400 yards from the Sanctuary and depending on the growing season, we should be able to make 3-400 bales of hay which will help enormously with our hay bill. We will have to pay a contractor to make the hay though.
Many thanks Mike and Tracy from All the donkeys at Follys Farm.
